Jane, the Hero

 Dear Jane,

We have once again reached the sad day of your passing. It has been two-hundred and one years since you departed this earth, but your memory and legacy are stronger than ever. To be sure, janeites around the globe mourn your early death (you were only forty-one) and yet we simultaneously rejoice in the beautifully written words you left behind for us. In truth, it is a most bittersweet day. 

 Now, as I have much updating to do, I will leave off with a short poem and the promise of another letter either this week or the next.

  I wrote the short poem below after being inspired by the picture you see on the right. I took this photo this very morning, and the words, "She needed a hero so she became one," instantly caught my attention. You really were your own hero, Jane and I still admire you so very much! (And yes...that is a Jane Austen action figure.)

 Jane the Hero

She needed a hero
and so she became one.
By writing on tirelessly
with each rising sun. 

She published her work,
she made her own money,
she wrote classic stories,
sometimes sad, sometimes funny.

Transporting her readers,
no matter their ages,
from Pemberly to Hartfield,
how we savor those pages!

Jane Austen's a hero
so please, shed no tears.
Just raise up your glass
to the authoress; Cheers.

October 10, 2014 Dear Jane, How is it that we are already in the midst of October? I fear that time is flying by much too quickly for my liking, and I am sure that I would feel much more at ease if it moved at a more leisurely pace. It seems that if one stops to rest for a single moment, the whole day is gone, and then the next begins without anything getting done at all! It is a truly vicious cycle, Jane, but "tis life" as they say and we must be glad for there is so much good to be had in it.  As you may know, Jane, I am quite partial to the month of October. "A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of."

May 23, 2014 Dear Jane, How truly right you are in the above sentiment, for a large income seems to be one of the ONLY recipes for happiness at this time! Must making a living be so incredibly difficult, Jane? Why won't a kind, elderly gentleman or lady bestow an endowment upon me with the hopes that,  because of their admirable generosity,  I will become the most remarkable artist I can be? January 9, 2015 Dear Jane, I fear that you won't be surprised to know how horrid I feel that I have not yet wished yourself or my gentle readers the happiest of Christmases or the grandest of New Years. Pray, take comfort in the fact that the new year has renewed my intentions to write as often as possible (without becoming a burden, of course). Our lovely Christmas tree. In truth, I can hardly believe that the New Year has once again come and our lives have already taken up the same busy pace of last year without a single backward glance. Why must one feel so forlorn after the holiday season ends, Jane? How dreadfully I miss the glad tidings of Christmas, with it's abundance of delicious foods, dear friends and family and general gaiety all around; it was such a tremendous time. However, I suppose there's truth in the sentiment that all good things must eventually end, for if we only knew good things, then we would never appreciate these truly special moments ...
